soundtrack for Befriended
I met Tom Moore at a party and altogether forgot that he was a film-maker who had discussed a collaboration. He contacted me months later asking if I was still interested. I chose to score Befriended primarily because of his professionalism and his allowing me a good degree of creative freedom; I asked to not be given any temp tracks and score to the film footage (though I started working to the script initially).
This score was, in some scenes, challenging, due to the pacing of the film. In some of the more dramatic and tense scenes it was difficult to build up tension due to the brevity of the film. So this was an exercise in compressing moods which I would usually draw out to smaller durations. I also had to make some compromises, as some of my decisions during the calmer parts of the film were too dark for Tom's liking. This resulted in some of the synth parts changing, as well as adding a section with piano and MIDI strings (I'm fond of the sound of a slightly crappy string synth). I also utilised some extended guitar techniques, especially during the scenes of paranoia and hallucination in the film.
